Heart Attacks Rise After Disasters: Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe Warns of 40% Increase Following Cyclone Ditva

Cardiologist Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe stated that international studies have confirmed a nearly 40 percent increase in heart attacks following sudden disasters such as Cyclone Ditva. Sri Lanka Latest News

He further explained that individuals may develop heart-related conditions due to the severe mental stress caused by the destruction of their homes and the loss of loved ones during such unexpected disasters.

According to Dr. Ranasinghe, factors such as psychological stress, elevated blood pressure, and an increased heart rate significantly contribute to this risk.

He also emphasized that being unable to take essential medications—such as blood pressure tablets, diabetes medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, clopidogrel, and warfarin—can further aggravate the situation.

Therefore, during such times, it is crucial to maintain mental resilience and ensure adequate sleep, Dr. Ranasinghe advised. He urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any physical discomfort or symptoms of heart disease, stressing that the most important steps are to stay mentally strong and not neglect their regular medications.
