The Samagi Jana Balawegaya-led opposition today submitted to the Speaker of Parliament a proposal to appoint a special committee to investigate the release of 323 containers from the Colombo Port without mandatory physical inspection. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
According to instructions issued by the President regarding the release of the 323 red-labelled containers without adhering to proper procedures, the Treasury Secretary had previously appointed an inquiry committee to look into the matter.
In its report, the committee observed that the method used to release the containers was in violation of the law. It further stated that releasing containers without proper inspection poses a serious threat to national security, government revenue collection, and public safety.
Allegations have also been raised that drugs, weapons, and other prohibited substances may have been released through this process. Considering the seriousness of these issues, the opposition has requested the appointment of a special parliamentary committee, emphasizing that the matter is of national importance.
On this occasion, several parliamentarians including Gayantha Karunathilaka, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, D. V. Chanaka, J. C. Alawathura, and Kavinda Jayawardena were present, along with a group of others.
