Spike in Influenza, Dengue, and Chikungunya Cases Among Children, Warns Dr. Deepal Perera
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Dr. Deepal Perera, a specialist at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, reports a noticeable increase in cases of influenza, chikungunya, and dengue among children in recent weeks.

He attributes the surge in dengue and chikungunya infections to the recent adverse weather conditions and emphasizes the urgent need for the public to take proactive measures in eliminating mosquito breeding sites.

Dr. Perera confirmed that a number of children showing symptoms of dengue and chikungunya have been admitted to the hospital. He warned that dengue can be fatal if not treated promptly, and noted that those recovering from chikungunya may experience joint pain lasting for several months.

Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, Dr. Perera added that chikungunya poses significant risks to pregnant women and the elderly. Infections during pregnancy could potentially affect the unborn child, making prevention all the more critical.

In addition to mosquito-borne diseases, Dr. Perera also drew attention to a rise in influenza cases, cautioning that the illness spreads rapidly among children. He urged parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if symptoms appear.
