Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that attention has been directed toward a new COVID-19 variant currently spreading in several countries across the globe.
Speaking at the media briefing held to announce recent Cabinet decisions, the Minister noted that while there is no immediate threat within Sri Lanka at present, proactive measures are already being implemented, particularly at airport entry points.
The Minister further explained:
“There have been some reports in Singapore and India. We are very attentive to that. There has been no information yet about an incident on the scale of previous outbreaks. However, interventions are being made from the airport itself.”
According to recent reports from Indian media, India—Sri Lanka’s closest neighbor—has recorded 1,009 cases of individuals infected with the new COVID variant. Of these cases, four fatalities have been reported.
