A memorial service was held today (May 1) in Colombo to commemorate the 32nd death anniversary of former President Ranasinghe Premadasa, who was assassinated in a bomb attack during a May Day parade in 1993.
The ceremony took place near the Aluthkade Courthouse and was attended by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Mrs. Hema Premadasa, several Members of Parliament, and other distinguished guests.
President Premadasa was participating in a May Day rally organized by the United National Party on May 1, 1993, when a suicide bomber affiliated with the LTTE detonated a bomb as the procession reached Armour Street in Colombo. The attack claimed the lives of 23 individuals, including President Premadasa.
Today’s event was held in remembrance of Ranasinghe Premadasa, the second Executive President of Sri Lanka, who served the nation until his tragic assassination 32 years ago.
