Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, held a special discussion with the United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Ms. Julie Chang, regarding the tariffs imposed by the U.S. government.
The meeting took place yesterday afternoon (07) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the discussion, Minister Herath engaged with Ambassador Chang on how Sri Lanka should respond to the current U.S. tariff policy affecting the country. The dialogue also included a detailed examination of the existing trade relations between Sri Lanka and the United States, along with the potential impact of the revised U.S. tariff measures on Sri Lanka’s export sector.
In an official statement, the Ministry emphasized the importance of reviewing the U.S. tariff policy to ensure the uninterrupted progress of Sri Lanka’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. The review was also highlighted as essential to supporting the nation’s broader economic recovery process following the severe financial crisis experienced in 2022.
