Deputy Youth Affairs Minister Eranga Gunasekara has been identified as a suspect by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the arson attack on former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence on 5th Lane, Kollupitiya, during the Aragalaya period.

Gunasekara is also accused of obstructing firefighters who responded to the blaze at Wickremesinghe’s residence on July 9, 2022. He is among a significant number of suspects named in the case, which is being heard before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

Despite being issued a summons, Gunasekara failed to appear in court. His legal representatives informed the court that he was unable to attend due to illness. In response, Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura ordered that he be produced in court on the next scheduled date, along with a valid medical certificate.

Meanwhile, arrest warrants have been issued against other suspects who failed to appear in court.
