Former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has been summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement regarding the death of a police sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division. The sergeant was killed in a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara, in 2023.

A senior CID official confirmed that the former minister has been asked to appear tomorrow to record his statement concerning the case. The official further stated that suspicions have arisen suggesting that Alles may possess crucial information related to the incident.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon is currently in remand custody in connection with the case.

The fatal shooting took place on December 31, 2023, claiming the life of a police sergeant attached to the Colombo Crimes Division.

In a recent development, the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered the arrest of eight police officers, including the then-Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, in connection with the incident.
