Maradana Police have arrested 27 individuals who staged a protest in front of the Ministry of Health this morning (28), defying a court order.

According to police sources, the arrested individuals will be presented before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court later today.

The demonstration, organized by the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences Students’ Union, took place yesterday afternoon, with protesters raising multiple demands. The convener of the Inter-University Students’ Union, along with several others, also joined the protest.

During the demonstration, eight representatives engaged in discussions with the Secretary of the Ministry of Health. However, as the discussions failed to reach a resolution, the protesters continued their demonstration at the same location.

The police had informed the court about the protest and subsequent march, leading to a court order prohibiting demonstrators from entering Hospital Square within the Maradana Police Division. The order also restricted protests, marches, and gatherings in front of the Ministry of Health, as well as blocking highways and sidewalks around Deans Road, Serum Road, Regent Street, and the National Hospital Square.
