The Supreme Court today (18) ruled that the detention order issued by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, to detain and investigate a woman arrested in connection with a heroin possession case in 2020, was unlawful.
The Court further ordered that the government pay a compensation of one hundred thousand rupees to the petitioner, in recognition of the violation of her fundamental human rights.
This ruling came as a result of a fundamental rights petition filed by Kanchana Priyadarshani Madurapperuma, a resident of the Pokunuwita area in Henagama. She had been arrested by the Peliyagoda Special Investigation Unit in connection with the case.
