The Court of Appeal has concluded the consideration of the writ petition seeking to quash the order issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court for the arrest of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon.

Accordingly, the court announced today (12) that its verdict will be delivered on the 17th of this month.

On February 27, the Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an order to arrest and produce eight individuals, including IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, in connection with a 2023 shooting incident in front of a hotel in the Pelena area of Weligama. The incident resulted in the death of an officer from the Colombo Crimes Division and left another officer injured.

Despite multiple attempts by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to apprehend Tennakoon, he has not been located at the inspected locations.

Following the CID’s report to the court, the Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an open warrant yesterday (11), instructing law enforcement to arrest IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon on sight.
