Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, has assured India’s support for media training initiatives aimed at Tamil journalists in the country.

During a discussion held on Friday (February 28, 2025) at the Indian High Commission in Colombo with representatives of the All Sri Lanka Tamil Journalists Association, High Commissioner Jha stated that India is willing to provide professional training opportunities for Tamil journalists in Sri Lanka.

The meeting focused on the challenges faced by Tamil journalists, including repression, professional limitations, and the need for enhanced training. The discussion also covered the necessity of new media training for electronic journalists and the lack of essential equipment required for the profession.

Listening attentively to the concerns raised, the High Commissioner affirmed that India would take steps to facilitate training programs on modern media strategies, covering print, electronic, and social media platforms.

Representatives of the All Sri Lanka Tamil Journalists Association elaborated on the difficulties faced by regional journalists, including suppression, investigative pressures, and hardships encountered in news reporting. They particularly highlighted the challenges faced by journalists in Batticaloa, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, and the central hill country regions.

India’s assurance of support comes at a crucial time when Tamil journalists continue to face obstacles in their profession, and this initiative is expected to enhance their skills and professional development.
