The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was arrested and remanded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The decision was made by Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake following a comprehensive review of the case facts.
As per the court’s directive, the suspect was released on two surety bonds of Rs. 50 million each. Additionally, the court imposed a travel ban on the suspect and instructed the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to be informed accordingly.
The Magistrate further mandated Yoshitha Rajapaksa to report to the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) on the last Sunday of every month. He was also instructed to avoid any form of influence on witnesses related to the case.
While delivering the ruling, the Magistrate highlighted that the bail was granted in accordance with the provisions of the Bail Act. This decision was made due to the prosecution’s failure to provide sufficient and satisfactory evidence to justify further remand of the suspect.
