The Forum convened in Parliament under the leadership of its Chairperson, Minister Saroja Savitri Paulraj, to discuss this pressing issue.
During the meeting, Minister Paulraj highlighted the need to amend the current marriageable age in Sri Lanka. As part of this initiative, the proposal includes gathering input from civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders to draft necessary amendments. The goal is to align the marriageable age across the various marriage laws currently in effect and to prepare final recommendations through the Forum.
Additionally, the Women Parliamentarians’ Forum has focused on making critical amendments to provide a clear and accurate definition of ‘child.’
The meeting was attended by the Forum’s Deputy Co-Chairpersons, Attorneys-at-Law Chamindrani Kiriella and Samanmali Gunasinghe, along with female Members of Parliament.
