Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has announced the implementation of recommendations from the Public Utilities Commission as part of the government’s policy to reduce electricity rates by 30% within three years.
The first phase of this initiative came into effect at midnight on January 17, with a 20% reduction in electricity rates. The Minister confirmed that this adjustment would bring relief to all electricity consumers across the country.
“I believe this decision will be particularly beneficial to the hotel sector and industrialists, as well as the general public,” Minister Engineer Kumara Jayakody stated in an official announcement. “A reduction of this magnitude provides significant relief to the people. As a government, we are pleased to have navigated the challenges to deliver this benefit to the nation.”
The Public Utilities Commission officially recommended the 20% rate reduction, which was implemented as of January 17. The Commission has also communicated the necessary recommendations to the Ministry of Energy to facilitate this policy.
This reduction marks a key milestone in the government’s broader commitment to easing the financial burden on citizens and supporting economic growth.
