Colombo: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed officials to take immediate measures to combat drug trafficking and underworld activities within the prison system.

The President issued these instructions during a high-level discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat today (30). He emphasized the urgent need to expedite legal proceedings for inmates involved in drug-related and underworld activities. Highlighting the potential of modern technology, he proposed adopting online systems to accelerate case resolutions and instructed officials to address any challenges related to implementing these systems by upgrading the necessary infrastructure.

The meeting also addressed allegations of prison officials’ involvement in irregularities. President Dissanayake urged authorities to go beyond standard disciplinary protocols and take legal action against those found guilty of misconduct.

Additionally, attention was drawn to the pressing issue of vacancies in the Government Analyst’s Department, with a call to expedite the recruitment process to ensure operational efficiency.

Key officials, including Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration Ayesha Jinasena, and Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, were present at the meeting.
