The police have identified the suspect responsible for stabbing and injuring police officers during a recent protest held in front of the Ministry of Education at Isurupaya. The protest was organized to demand the inclusion of development officers, currently employed as teachers in government schools, into the official teaching service.
A senior police officer leading the investigation confirmed that the suspect is a development officer who actively participated in the protest. The officer noted that the individual was seen lying in front of a police jeep and engaging in disorderly behavior during the incident. He further stated that since the suspect is currently evading arrest, authorities will consider releasing his photographs to the media to facilitate identification and apprehension.
Development officers assigned to schools have been staging protests outside the Ministry of Education in Pelawatte since the 2nd of this month, urging authorities to integrate them into the government teaching service. What began as a peaceful demonstration escalated into a confrontation, resulting in clashes between protesters and police officers tasked with maintaining security. During the unrest, a Sub-Inspector and two police constables sustained injuries caused by sharp weapons.
The senior officer added that extensive police investigations, supported by a detailed analysis of video footage captured during the protest, enabled authorities to clearly identify the suspect who assaulted the police officers. The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the individual.
