Deputy Minister of Public Security, Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala, revealed to Mawrata that progress is underway to shed light on high-profile cases such as the murders of veteran journalist and Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickramatunga and rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, and other politically suppressed cases.
The Deputy Minister stated that the President has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Investigation Division to proceed without any political interference. He acknowledged that while there may be delays in uncovering concealed information, the authorities are committed to bringing the suspects in these cases to justice.
Speaking to Mawrata, CID Director Ms. Imesha Muthumala confirmed that files related to politically motivated killings and disappearances over recent years are currently under active review by specialized CID teams. These teams are working to consolidate information, with priority given to cases that have sparked significant public concern.
A senior security official also shared insights, stating that ongoing investigations into the MiG aircraft deal may provide critical leads that could unravel the circumstances surrounding Lasantha Wickramatunga’s assassination.
The renewed focus on these investigations is expected to address long-standing questions and deliver justice in cases that have deeply impacted the nation.
