India Rules Out De-Dollarisation and BRICS Currency Proposal: EAM Jaishankar at Doha Forum 2024

During the Doha Forum 2024, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar clarified India’s stance on global financial systems, emphasizing that the country has never supported the idea of de-dollarisation. He stated, “India has never been for de-dollarisation, and currently, there is no proposal for a BRICS currency. While BRICS nations do discuss financial transactions, our position remains clear.”

Dr. Jaishankar also highlighted the significance of the U.S. as India’s largest trade partner, underscoring that India has “no interest in weakening the dollar at all.”

Reflecting on India’s diplomatic ties with the U.S., he noted, “We had a strong and solid relationship with the first Trump administration. While there were some trade-related issues, there were many areas where President Trump adopted an international approach. I remind people that it was during his tenure that the QUAD was restarted.”

The minister further acknowledged the personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President Donald Trump, reinforcing the strength of bilateral ties between India and the U.S.
