Rising Coconut Prices Lead to 90% Drop in Offerings at Kataragama Temple and Other Shrines Across Sri Lanka
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Reports indicate a significant reduction of nearly 90% in the number of devotees throwing coconuts at temples nationwide, including the renowned Kataragama Temple.

Traditionally, devotees visiting the Kataragama shrine carry coconuts alongside their offering bowls, as throwing coconuts is a symbolic act deeply embedded in peace rituals. This practice has long held spiritual significance for worshippers.

However, recent developments reveal that devotees are increasingly abstaining from this ritual due to the soaring cost of coconuts across the country.

According to sources, the current price of a single coconut in the Kataragama area has surged to Rs. 160, making it a costly addition to the offerings. This price hike has evidently led many devotees to reconsider their participation in the ritual.
