The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a statement indicating that the Sri Lanka Air Quality Index (SLAQI) is expected to range between 92 and 120 throughout the day today (30), owing to prevailing weather conditions and a border disturbance from the north.
The Environmental Studies and Services Division of NBRO, in its daily air quality report, warns that air quality in several regions across the island may rise to slightly unhealthy levels.
According to today’s SLAQI forecast, Colombo is projected to record values between 108 and 116. Similar conditions are expected in Jaffna and Polonnaruwa, where air quality is likely to range from 112 to 120.
Additionally, air quality index values exceeding 100 are anticipated in several other cities, including Kurunegala, Vavuniya, Kandy, Kegalle, Galle, Badulla, and Trincomalee.
Understanding the SLAQI Levels:
- 0-50: Good
- 51-100: Moderate
- 101-150: Slightly harmful
- 151-200: Unhealthy
- 201-300: Very harmful
- 301-500: Hazardous
The NBRO advises sensitive individuals, such as those with respiratory conditions, to seek medical attention if they experience difficulty breathing under these conditions.
In contrast, the organization expects the air quality to remain at a moderate level in Nuwara Eliya, Embilipitiya, Kalutara, Hambantota, and Monaragala.
Yesterday (29), air quality in most urban areas was recorded at slightly harmful levels, highlighting the continued impact of deteriorating air conditions across the country.
The NBRO continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to take necessary precautions to protect their health.
