Legal Complaint Filed Against Lawyer Over Alleged False Statements on Rajapaksa Funds During Presidential Election
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

After filing a complaint with the Supreme Court regarding alleged false statements made by lawyer Nilanthi Kottahachchi during the last presidential election, Harsha Priyanga addressed the media.

He stated, “During the last presidential election, a significant issue raised was the claim that the Rajapaksas had embezzled national funds and invested them abroad. Nilanthi Kottahachchi publicly asserted that these funds were hidden in Uganda and would be retrieved after the election. Previously, there was a strong perception among our people that the country was suffering from shortages in resources like oil and gas because national funds had been siphoned off to Uganda. However, following the election, Kottahachchi herself admitted that no such investments existed and that a local company had legally handled the funds.

This reversal has left us, as a political group, in a vulnerable position. We view it as an attempt to tarnish the reputation of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, a leader recognized for his contributions to national stability and prosperity, and to undermine his political ideology. People place their trust in lawyers, expecting them to uphold truth and justice. Unfortunately, we feel that in this case, a lawyer has spread falsehoods rather than truth, fostering division within society.

We have appealed to the Honorable Supreme Court to take disciplinary action regarding the misuse of this profession, which has caused significant harm. We trust that the Court will act to prevent further dissemination of misinformation and deceit in our country.”
