Court Orders Investigation into Car Transfer After Son’s Death
In a recent court session, it was revealed that a car registered in the name of a deceased businessman’s daughter-in-law was falsely transferred to his uncle. The Attanagalla No. 02 Magistrate, Manjula Karunaratne, mandated the Station Commander of the Gampaha Division Special Crime Investigation Unit to instruct the Motor Transport Commissioner to appear before the court regarding this matter.
The Gampaha Division Special Crime Investigation Unit had filed a complaint alleging that, following the unexpected death of a well-known businessman’s married son in Stipangoda a few years ago, the vehicle registered under his wife’s name was improperly transferred to the name of the deceased’s father.
When the complaint was addressed again on the afternoon of September 30, the parents of the deceased, who had been released on bail, were present in court.
During the proceedings, Police Sergeant S.A.S.L. Gunasekara from the Gampaha Division Special Crime Investigation Unit stated that the relevant file concerning the vehicle was missing from the Motor Transport Commissioner’s office. He noted that an officer from the office had previously appeared in court multiple times, confirming the absence of the file.
Despite a prior order for the Motor Transport Commissioner to report to the Criminal Investigation Department about the missing file, Sergeant Gunasekara requested that an appropriate directive be issued to resolve the matter. He highlighted that although the Motor Transport Commissioner had been ordered to appear in court, he failed to do so, leading to other officers being sent in his place.
Considering the police’s submissions, the Magistrate instructed the Commissioner of Motor Transport to appear in court the following day. The next hearing is scheduled for November 18.
Sergeant Gunasekara led the prosecution for the Gampaha Division Special Crime Investigation Unit.
