Rishad Bathiudeen Urges President to Revoke Liquor Store License in Mannar Amid Local Protests
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

All Ceylon People’s Congress leader, Rishad Bathiudeen, has urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to revoke the license of a newly opened liquor store on Mannar’s main road.

In a letter addressed to the President, Bathiudeen highlighted the location of the liquor store, noting its proximity to schools, garment factories, and residential areas, which has caused significant concern among local residents. He emphasized that the establishment of the store has led to growing unrest, including a protest that took place last month.

Bathiudeen, a former Member of Parliament, expressed frustration that despite public opposition and protests, the authorities have yet to take meaningful action to address the situation.

He further claimed that the license for the liquor store was issued by the previous government for political reasons. Bathiudeen questioned the appropriateness of granting a liquor license in such a sensitive area, particularly when local residents have made their objections clear.

In his letter, he urged President Dissanayake to personally intervene and take the necessary steps to cancel the store’s license. He stressed the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the local community, especially students and workers, and expressed confidence in the President’s commitment to justice and fairness.
