Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, has expressed that he sees no reason to resign from his position despite the recent defeat of President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Saturday’s election.
Leading presidential candidates Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake have both indicated intentions to renegotiate the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement if elected.
Weerasinghe noted that many of the goals set by the IMF have been successfully implemented during his tenure, emphasizing the need to continue these economic reforms to ensure the country’s stability.
It is important to note that the Governor of the Central Bank is appointed by the President with the approval of a Constituent Assembly, and cannot be removed solely at the President’s discretion.
