Anuradhapura resident Gnanavathy Jayasuriya, commonly known as “Gnana Akka,” who was frequently visited by former presidents, politicians, and security chiefs seeking blessings for various purposes, has received compensation, according to the Compensation Office.
This information was disclosed in response to a query made under the Freedom of Information Act.
Gnana Akka’s residence, temple, and hotel, located in the Issurupura area along Nava Kandy Road in Anuradhapura, were set ablaze by a group during the unrest on May 10, 2022.
The office spokesperson stated that financial compensation was granted based on the value determined in a confidential assessment report by a government assessor, approved by the Cabinet. However, the compensation provided did not extend to her hotel and temple, the office confirmed.
