Samagi Sevana: A Welcome Home for Cancer Patients in Need
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Colombo, Sri Lanka – August 7, 2024 – Samagi Sevana stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Apeksha Hospital. The brainchild of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, Samagi Sevana was established in response to a heartfelt plea from a group of children diagnosed with cancer. These children requested a place to stay during their treatment, particularly when traveling from distant regions.

Thanks to the generosity of a few dedicated donors, particularly the John and Varuni Samagika (Perera) Novick Foundation in the USA, the vision of Samagi Sevana became a reality. The center commenced operations in January 2021, conveniently located just 1.5 km from Apeksha Hospital. Since its inception, Samagi Sevana has provided shelter, food, and care to over 1400 patients and their families, offering its services completely free of charge, irrespective of ethnic origin, creed, or socioeconomic status.

Currently, Samagi Sevana serves 25-35 patients daily, with a full-time staff and clergy on hand to provide support and care. The center’s commitment to alleviating the burdens faced by cancer patients and their families during their treatment journey has been unwavering.

However, to continue providing this essential service, Samagi Sevana urgently needs increased funding. The home relies on the generosity of donors around the world to sustain its operations and ensure that all who seek help receive the care they need.
