Badulla Police detained 34 individuals, including seven women, for violating election laws in front of the Badulla bus station on the 5th of this month. The group was reportedly wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Only Ranil is Possible,” which appeared to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The police acted upon a complaint received by the Election Complaints Unit and brought the individuals into custody.

Following their arrest, State Minister for Primary Industries, Chamara Sampath Dasanayake, arrived at the Badulla police station, where he confronted the officers regarding the detentions. He reportedly demanded the release of the group, citing the importance of ensuring that laws are applied equally to all.

Minister Dasanayake also engaged in discussions with the Badulla District Assistant Election Commissioner. Shortly afterward, the Assistant Commissioner instructed the release of the individuals involved.

The group was subsequently freed, and no further action was taken against them. The incident has raised concerns about the enforcement of election laws and the role of political influence in police actions.
