The Supreme Court ruled that the President violated the basic human rights of the then members of the Election Commission and the Minister of Finance by not holding the local government polls as stipulated on March 9 last year. Sri Lanka Latest News

Accordingly, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to take steps to hold the local government polls as soon as possible.

The Supreme Court issued these orders while ruling on the basic rights petitions filed by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the National Jana Balawegaya, the Alternative Policy Center and the Paffrel Institute, demanding a verdict that the basic human rights of the people have been violated by not holding the local government polls.

The decision was given by a five-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Vijith Malalgoda, Murdu Fernando, Gamini Amarasekara and Yasanta Kodagoda.
