Political sources say that it is very likely that the local government election will be held immediately after the presidential election. Sri Lanka Latest News
However, the candidates who have been nominated for the local government elections by certain parties have decided to support the presidential election candidates from other parties against the party’s opinion. A condition is reported.
Unlike other general elections, in a local government election, the party secretary general has unlimited powers to remove a member from office if he or she acts outside the party’s opinion.
If a local government member is removed by the party secretary general, according to the election law, the party secretary general has the power to appoint someone else from the list without appointing the next candidate on the list.
It is also stated that it cannot be challenged before the court.
Accordingly, candidates who support other presidential candidates in the nominations for the local government elections may have seen that there is a serious risk of their councillors being abolished if they win.
Although the Election Commission took steps to call the local government elections last year, the Election Commission had to postpone it indefinitely due to the government not releasing the related financial allocations.
Later, when the opposition went to court against it, orders were issued to the responsible parties to release the financial allocations related to holding the election, but it has not been fulfilled till now.
Also, there has been no cancellation of the nominations given for the local government elections.
