Although some say that the 22nd constitutional amendment does not affect the presidential election, Mr. G. L. Peiris said that he is strongly opposed to it and that the effort will be definitely defeated as it will have a severe impact on the presidential election. Sri Lanka Latest News

Speaking at a press conference held today (22) in Colombo, Professor Peiris also said:

⛔ The first day that the proposed 22nd Constitution Act can be submitted to Parliament is the 25th.

⛔ That the proposed Constitution Amendment Act requires a 2/3 majority in the Parliament, and even if it is received, the referendum should be held within 30 days..

⛔Rs. 10000 million is spent on a referendum… it is a wasteful expenditure…

⛔ If the MPs are partial to the 22nd constitutional amendment at a time when poverty has increased, they should think twice about it..

⛔ Even the Minister of Justice thinks that bringing this proposed constitutional amendment is not appropriate in such a situation.

⛔The Minister of Justice has stated that the persons who gazetted the amendment contrary to his recommendations are responsible for the consequences that may arise from the decisions taken contrary to his orders.

⛔ This proposed constitutional amendment bill will seriously affect the presidential election..

⛔ Working like one to defeat the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill in the Parliament…

⛔ Human rights are violated not by holding elections but not holding elections…

⛔ The government was using strategies from the beginning to postpone the presidential election.., the proposed 22nd Constitution Amendment Act is its last trump card…

⛔ The chairman of the Election Commission took the advice of the Attorney General to solve the problems for the presidential election… , At this time, if the former Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam had been in that position, something would have happened quite differently…

⛔Destroying public money for a narrow political agenda of an individual is a sin…

⛔ With the limited resources of the Election Commission, it is not practical to conduct a referendum and a presidential election in the same period..

⛔The election that the whole country is waiting for is the presidential election…, no one has asked for a referendum at this moment.. By forcing both of these to be held in a short period, confusion is created in the public mind…

⛔After presenting this proposed Constitution Amendment Bill to the Parliament, vote against it and defeat the last strategy of the government to postpone the elections…

⛔ The Election Commission will set the date for the presidential election within this week…
