That is after studying the proposal presented by the Ceylon Electricity Board for the second electricity tariff revision this year.
After taking into consideration the suggestions and opinions presented in the public consultation held in this regard, the commission announced its decision as follows.
Accordingly, the electricity charges of all consumer categories such as domestic, religious places, hotels, industries, general purpose and government institutions will be reduced from tomorrow.
Although the proposal of the Ceylon Electricity Board had limited the reduction of the total electricity charges to 10 per cent, the Commission has increased the reduction of the total charges to 22.5%.
In religious places, the unit price of Rs.8 and Rs.9 each charged so far will be Rs.6, the unit price of Rs.18 to Rs.10, the unit price of Rs.32 to Rs.20 and the unit price of Rs.43 to Rs.30. Reduced from tomorrow.
Monthly fixed charges charged by religious places have also been reduced for all categories.
The Public Utilities Commission has decided to reduce the unit price from Rs.37 to Rs.30.50 and Rs.25.50 to Rs.30.50 and Rs.18 respectively for the sub-category with a contract demand of less than 42 thousand volts in the factories and hotels category.
The monthly charges applicable to those two categories of customers have not been revised.
In the new tariff revision, the unit price of 55 rupees, 45 rupees and 37 rupees each has been reduced to 46.75 rupees, 38.25 rupees and 31.45 rupees respectively for government institutions and general purpose sectors.
Along with the new tariff revision, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has imposed 7 conditions on the Sri Lanka Electricity Board.
Among the conditions is that electricity bills should be issued when requested by electricity consumers.
Conditions have also been imposed to enter into agreements with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation for the purchase of fuel for electricity generation.
