Sri Lanka’s Ban on Foreign Research Vessels Ruffles Feathers, Draws Ire from China
In a surprising move, Sri Lanka has barred Chinese research vessels, including the Xiang Yang Hong 3, from conducting studies in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for a year, citing security concerns amid pressure from neighbouring India.
The decision, which came into effect on January 3, 2024, has sparked discontent from Chinese authorities, who have expressed their dissatisfaction with Sri Lanka, accusing the nation of succumbing to external influence. While India applauds the move as a blow to China, Chinese media retaliates by criticizing India for coercing neighbouring countries into anti-Indian actions.
