In a recent address during the 76th phase of the Sakwala congenial classrooms program, Opposition Leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa emphasized the crucial need for instilling a profound understanding of the Constitution at the school level. Stressing that the Constitution safeguards the rights of all, irrespective of position, race, religion, caste, or status, he highlighted the misconception prevalent among some adults. Premadasa asserted that issuing various press releases was deceiving people due to a lack of comprehension of the Constitution.
Further, he underscored the four pillars essential for protecting democracy: executive, legislature, judiciary, and the unofficial independent media. Addressing concerns about the executive presidency, he clarified that constitutional amendments aimed to limit arbitrary powers, emphasizing the role of the Constitutional Council in key appointments.
Premadasa affirmed the autonomy of the Constituent Assembly, dispelling notions that it acts as a puppet to the President. He stressed that democratic principles guide its members, preventing unchecked rule by the President.
In addressing the separation of powers, the opposition leader highlighted that neither the executive nor the legislature can influence the judiciary. He assured that all three main pillars protecting democracy should operate democratically, with the judiciary free from external influence.
Lastly, Premadasa addressed the economic challenges, acknowledging the country’s financial struggles. He expressed the need to address shortcomings, overcome challenges, and rebuild the country collaboratively. The leader outlined initiatives the Samagi Jana Balawegaya undertook, emphasizing efforts in education, health, and various welfare programs.
