Police said that nearly 30 shops were completely destroyed in the fire.
The fire broke out in a row of cloth, plastic and fruit shops located behind the bus station in Mawanella town.
The police said that the fire lasted for about an hour.
After a lot of effort, the fire was extinguished by using the fire trucks belonging to the Mawanella local council.
The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.
