Stark Disparities Revealed: 60.5 per cent families’ income decreased while 91per cent families’ expenditure increased: Census and Statistics Report Highlights I Sri Lanka Latest News

The Department of Census and Statistics states that the latest survey has revealed that the monthly income of families in Sri Lanka has decreased by 60.5 per cent due to the economic crisis. Sri Lanka Latest News

The department says that while the monthly income of 60.5 per cent of families has decreased, the average monthly expenditure of 91 per cent of families has increased.

But the Department of Population and Statistics states that 73.6 per cent of the families whose income has decreased have not taken any action for it and 6.6 per cent have found an additional source of income or an additional job.

The department also points out that the measures taken by families whose income has decreased include taking loans, mortgages, and asking for food or money from others.

The department said that among the families whose monthly expenses have increased, the food expenses of 99.1 per cent have increased and the transportation fees of 83 per cent have increased.

The Department of Sensus and Statistics states that the survey revealed that 22 per cent of the families in Sri Lanka are burdened with debt due to the economic crisis. The economic crisis has affected the education of 54.9 per cent of those between the ages of 3 and 21.

The Department of Population and Statistics states that 53.2 per cent of those affected by education have reduced or avoided spending on stationery and 44 per cent have cut back on spending on new uniforms or stopped buying them.

The Department of Population and Statistics stated that the survey revealed that about 29 per cent of people have fallen victim to diseases during the period of the economic crisis and 7 per cent of them have changed the procedure of receiving health treatment due to the economic crisis.
