Mr. Nimal Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, emphasized that the news reported by a newspaper called Deshaya that the Election Commission has agreed to a proposal to postpone the local government election for a certain period is completely false.

In a special statement to Mawrata website, he said that the task of his commission is to conduct the election, and that the work is being done in a proper manner.

He said that it is the responsibility of the Treasury to provide the necessary provisions, it is the responsibility of the police to provide the necessary security, and it is the responsibility of the respective departments to provide other needs.

Therefore, he pointed out that the details of this news should be heard from the same newspaper.

However, for the past few weeks, newspapers belonging to UNP Deputy Leader Mr. Ruwan Wijayawardena have been reporting various false news to postpone the election.

This news was also reported in a newspaper ‘ Deshaya’ claiming belonging to Mr. Ruwan Wijayawardena.

It can be seen that the false news has been reported by several websites related to the government.

High-ranking reliable sources say that the government has prepared a proposal to get the Election Commission to agree to postpone the proposed local government election for a certain period.

According to the reports we have received, it has been learned that this proposal will be presented on the next day when the case related to postponing the election, which is currently pending in the Supreme Court, is called. The next hearing of the case will be on February 10.

It is further reported that the Ministry of Finance is unable to provide the money needed for the election at this time, the police are unable to provide security for the election, the fuel and other energy supply is difficult during the election, the election delimitation work has not been completed yet, the regulations of the Election Expenses Control Act have not been formally prepared, the youth representation 30 It is stated that many issues, including raising it to %, are among the proposed reasons for postponing the election.

A senior spokesperson of the government stated that the government intends to present this proposal to the Election Commission in the open court and request that the election be postponed for a certain period with the agreement of the same commission.
