Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa says that the necessary provisions are in place to hold the Provincial Council elections. Sri Lanka Latest News
The Minister made these remarks while responding to a question raised by a journalist at the Cabinet decision-informing media briefing held today (26), regarding statements made by JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva that it would not be possible to hold Provincial Council elections this year and that there were no funds allocated for it.
The Minister clarified that funds have already been allocated for the elections and that there is no issue regarding financial provisions. However, he noted that the main obstacle preventing the elections is related to the required legal framework.
He further stated that a parliamentary committee is currently being formed to address the issue, and explained that discussions are underway within the committee. Once the necessary legal provisions are finalized, the elections can be held without delay.
Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa further commented:
“This government is a government that has held two elections within eight months. Our intention is to hold these Provincial Council elections while safeguarding the sovereignty of the people as provided for in the Constitution. There is no issue regarding provisions in this matter. Funds have already been allocated. Even if funds were not allocated, it is generally possible to allocate them through a supplementary estimate. However, although the government’s intention is to hold the Provincial Council elections as quickly as possible, there is an issue with the required legal provisions. A parliamentary committee is now working on resolving this, and discussions are ongoing. Once the necessary legal framework is in place, we will be able to hold the Provincial Council elections at the earliest possible time.”
