Parliament Exposes Major Losses from MPs’ Discounted Housing Purchases

It was disclosed in Parliament today that 76 Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers whose residences were destroyed by fire during the period of struggle have obtained houses from the Wiyatpura Housing Project at significantly discounted prices. Deputy Minister of Housing, T.B. Sarath, revealed this information while addressing Parliament.

According to the Deputy Minister, these former MPs and Ministers have acquired housing units by paying amounts substantially lower than the current market value, causing substantial financial losses to the government.

The details provided by Deputy Minister Sarath are as follows:

It was disclosed in Parliament today that 76 Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers whose residences were destroyed by fire during the period of struggle have obtained houses from the Wiyatpura Housing Project at significantly discounted prices.   • Former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has purchased a house for Rs. 9.9 million, causing a loss of Rs. 11 million to the government.
  • MP Mohamed Muzammil has obtained a house by paying Rs. 3.3 million, resulting in a loss of Rs. 10 million to the government.
  • MP Nimal Piyatissa purchased a house for Rs. 3.3 million, incurring a Rs. 9.9 million loss to the government.
  • MP Gamini Waleboda acquired a house at Rs. 3.3 million, causing a loss of Rs. 9 million to the government.
  • MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has secured a house for Rs. 5.3 million, resulting in a government loss of Rs. 16 million.
  • MP Gamini Lokuge obtained a house for Rs. 4 million, causing a loss of Rs. 12 million to the government.
  • MP Kumarasiri Ratnayake purchased a house at Rs. 3.3 million, resulting in a Rs. 9.9 million loss.
  • MP Ajith Rajapaksa acquired a house at Rs. 4.2 million, causing a Rs. 12.6 million loss to the government.
  • MP Chinthana Amal Mayadunne has purchased a house for Rs. 4.2 million, incurring a government loss of Rs. 12 million.
  • MP Milan Jayathilake secured a house for Rs. 4.6 million, resulting in a loss of Rs. 13 million.
  • MP Tissakuttirachchi bought a house for Rs. 4.1 million, causing a Rs. 12 million loss to the government.
  • MP Weerasinghe purchased a house at Rs. 4.2 million, resulting in a loss of Rs. 12 million.
  • MP Bandara Herath acquired a house for Rs. 4.2 million, causing a Rs. 12 million loss to the government.
  • MP S.M. Chandrasena has purchased a house for Rs. 4.6 million, resulting in a loss of Rs. 13 million to the government.
  • MP Asoka Priyantha obtained a house at Rs. 4.2 million, causing a government loss of Rs. 12 million.
  • MP Premanath C. Dolawatta acquired a house for Rs. 4.1 million, incurring a Rs. 12 million loss to the government.
  • MP Shehan Semasinghe secured a house for Rs. 4.6 million, resulting in a Rs. 13.8 million loss.
  • MP Shantha Bandara purchased a house for Rs. 4.1 million, causing a loss of Rs. 12.5 million to the government.

These revelations highlight significant financial implications for the government resulting from housing allocations to MPs and Ministers at prices far below market valuations.
