In a noteworthy outcome of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election, although the party emerged victorious, it fell short of securing over 50% of the vote.
This election, conducted just a month after the party’s presidential election win, saw them achieve a vote share of 47.64%. In the recent presidential race, Anura Kumara Dissanayake secured over 42% of the vote.
Despite the party winning 15 seats in the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha this time, the opposition also claimed 15 seats, resulting in a balanced representation.
In contrast, during the 2018 local government election, held before the 2019 presidential election, the Pohottuwa party won all divisions in Elpitiya, while the ruling United National Party (UNP) failed to secure a single division.
A significant shift occurred this time, with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya capturing two divisions in Elpitiya, despite having recently lost the presidential election. Meanwhile, the UNP-supported alliance failed to secure any divisions in the Elpitiya race.
