Hirunika Premachandra Resigns as National Organizer of Samagi Vanita Balawega to Focus on General Election Campaign

Hirunika Premachandra announced her decision to resign from her position as National Organizer of the Samagi Vanita Balawega, citing her need to focus on her upcoming general election campaign. She clarified that her resignation was not influenced by any internal political disputes.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya office today (16th), Premachandra explained that the role of National Organizer involved responsibilities that extended across the entire country, which would hinder her ability to concentrate on her election efforts in the Kaduwela Constituency.

“I decided to step down, not to cause any embarrassment to our party leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa or General Secretary Mr. Ranjith Madduma Bandara. I’ve faced challenges in managing both national-level responsibilities and my political work at the constituency level,” she said.

Premachandra noted that she had participated in several rallies during the last presidential election, which limited her ability to fully support the campaign in her constituency. With the upcoming general election, she feels it necessary to focus her efforts entirely on her campaign.

“The responsibilities as National Organizer span the entire country, not just the Colombo district. Given that these roles within Samagi Jana Balavegaya are renewed annually, I believe it’s appropriate for someone else to take over during this election period. I have already submitted my resignation letter to Mr. Madduma Bandara, but he has yet to accept it. Regardless, my decision remains unchanged. I want to ensure I perform my duties effectively, and at the moment, I cannot manage both roles.”

Premachandra also emphasized her commitment to the party, stating, “I will never act in a way that would harm Samagi Jana Balawegaya. We’ve built this party through great sacrifices, and it is our collective responsibility to strengthen and support it moving forward. I remain dedicated to this cause.”

She further expressed her unwavering loyalty to the leadership of Sajith Premadasa, acknowledging the hard work put in during the last presidential election and reaffirming her commitment to securing a victory in the upcoming general election. “We may have faced a setback in the presidential race, but our focus now is on winning more seats in this general election. I am prepared to make every possible sacrifice to achieve that goal.”
