Former MP and spokesperson for the Ilankei Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), MA Sumanthiran, has called on the government to promptly reveal the names of former MPs and politicians involved in the acquisition and distribution of liquor licenses during the previous administration.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo yesterday, Mr. Sumanthiran stressed the importance of transparency, particularly in light of the ongoing controversy surrounding the proliferation of liquor stores across the country.

He urged the government to publish the list of individuals responsible for recommending the opening of these liquor outlets.

Sumanthiran highlighted that the increase in liquor stores has become a serious social issue, particularly impacting the younger generation. He further stated that the politicians and others who covertly facilitated the expansion of these establishments should be held accountable.

He also noted that there is credible information suggesting some individuals have profited by selling liquor licenses for personal financial gain.

Previous media reports have indicated that MPs from the Northern region are among those who were granted liquor licenses.
