Due to the early dissolution of Parliament, approximately 85 Members of Parliament (MPs) will lose their entitlement to pension benefits.
Under normal circumstances, MPs who serve a full five-year term are eligible for a lifetime pension of 45,000 rupees per month. However, because the current Parliament is set to dissolve early next year, these MPs will forfeit this benefit.
For MPs who serve two full parliamentary terms, the pension increases to approximately 55,000 rupees per month.
The ninth Parliament commenced on August 20, 2020, and was originally scheduled to conclude in August next year. However, the early dissolution will shorten its term.
Currently, an MP’s basic salary stands at 54,385 rupees, with additional allowances of 2,500 rupees for attending parliamentary sessions and 2,500 rupees for participating in committee meetings on non-sitting days.
