Tenders have been called for the construction of the second passenger terminal at Katunayake International Airport, according to K. D. S. Ruwanchandra, Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Aviation Services.
Ruwanchandra noted that the project will be funded through a loan from Japan. Initially, the terminal was slated for construction in 2019, but progress was delayed due to the economic crisis.
The new terminal is expected to handle an additional 9 million passengers per year, complementing the airport’s existing capacity of 6 million passengers annually from the first terminal. Upon completion, the combined facilities will serve up to 15 million passengers per year.
