Southern Province Governor Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena Resigns Following Presidential Election Results
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Southern Province Governor Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena announced his resignation today (22).

In a letter addressed to President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Mr. Abeywardena cited the ongoing election results, which indicate that a different candidate has emerged victorious in the presidential race, as his reason for stepping down from the post.

He expressed his gratitude in the letter, thanking the President for the trust placed in him by appointing him to the position.

Mr. Abeywardena, who previously served as the Governor of the North Western Province, was appointed as the Southern Province Governor in May of this year. Prior to these roles, he had held various positions, including Cabinet Minister, State Minister, and Deputy Minister, across multiple governments.
