As Sri Lanka prepares for its presidential election on September 21, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory urging caution for anyone traveling to the country.
In its advisory, the department recommends that residents avoid large gatherings, as protests are anticipated both before and after the election.
The State Department also cautions that even peaceful demonstrations could potentially escalate into violence without warning.
