When I was arrested, the police gave no reason! The Supreme Court has called the petition filed by Dr. Shafi, who claimed to have performed sterile surgery!

The Supreme Court has ordered to convene on May 16 to consider the basic human rights petition filed by Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, demanding that his arrest and detention by the police be ruled illegal.

That was when the three-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Mr. Priyantha Jayawardena, Mr. S. Thurai Raja and Mr. Kumuduni Wickramasinghe was called to consider the petition.

Dr. Shafi was arrested on charges of coerced sterilisation and money laundering, according to the police.

However, the petitioner doctor has requested a verdict that his fundamental rights were violated by being arrested and detained on false and baseless facts, pointing out that the police did not provide any reasonable reason for his arrest.
