The Harthal held in the North Eastern Province was a success.

A hartal has been called today (25) in the North and East demanding the repeal of the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act. The Tamil political parties called a hartal and due to the hartal shops were closed in many cities in the North Eastern Provinces.

While schools were opened in Vavuniya district, the attendance of children in Tamil schools was minimal.

The school principals mentioned that Sinhala schools in the district are functioning as usual. Due to the hartal, inter-provincial private buses are out of service, while Sri Lanka Transport Board buses are running as usual.

Many shops were closed in Vavuniya, Jaffna, Mulathiv, Mannar and Kilinochchi districts due to the hartal. Also, the shops in Batticaloa in the Eastern Province were completely closed and the daily activities of the city were completely disrupted.

The political parties in the north mentioned that solving the land problem in the north is another proposal of the hartal. Many trade associations and civil organizations of the northern provinces had expressed their support for the hartal.
