The finance minister will need to approve the letter requesting funding for the election.

Secretary to ministry of Finance has informed the Election Commission that the letter directed by the Election Commission to provide money for the election has been forwarded to the Minister of Finance for approval.

The Election Commission is sending a reply letter to the letter sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance on the 7th.

Mr. Nimal Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, said that under the current situation, the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance has informed that his approval is not sufficient for the release of money for the election.

However, he expressed confidence that the Election Commission will receive the amount soon.

Due to non-payment of money, the local government election scheduled for the 9th had to be postponed and it is now planned to be held on the 25th of April.

That is with the Supreme Court issuing an interim order to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and to the Attorney General on behalf of the Minister of Finance, stating that the money allocated to the local government vote in the 2023 budget will not be withheld.
