SLFP to join all-party government?

According to a senior SLFP source, the majority of the party’s parliamentary group believes the SLFP should join the all-party government and lead the initiative.

According to the source, “only one or two MPs are still opposed to joining the government.”

The party’s parliamentary group, on the other hand, is scheduled to meet with Party Leader Maithripala Sirisena this week to make a final decision on joining the government.

When asked what would happen if the party leadership refused to join the government, the source stated, “We will then have to make a decision because a majority of the party MPs believe that the SLFP needs to join the all-party government.”

The SLFP has held two rounds of talks with President Wickremesinghe, the most recent on Thursday (4).

At the meeting on Thursday, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena asked Sirisena if the SLFP would join the government, to which the SLFP Leader replied, “You already have five of our MPs.”

According to the source, “it appears the party leadership is still undecided on joining the all-party government, but we need to make a decision soon.” According to the source, such a move would also allow disgruntled Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members to rejoin the SLFP.
